Who we are

Our mission

Our mandate at AVIF is to help men and teenagers who want to stop using violent behaviours, men experiencing violence and men in difficulty.

AVIF aims to promote a violence-free society through its concrete actions, which include:

  • Individual and group meetings;
  • Training for parents;
  • Violence prevention and awareness workshops for the general public;
  • Collaboration with community groups.

Our approach

AVIF’s approach is fundamentally based on a clear distinction between a person and their behaviour. Our approach is humanistic, meaning we believe people are inherently good. We trust in the individual’s ability to use their internal resources to create change. People are responsible for their choices and can change and build respectful and equal relationships. Our intervention focuses on accountability regarding behaviours and personal growth.

For AVIF, violent behaviours are learned, not innate. They are shaped by gender stereotypes and learned through observation, experience or reinforcement. People must learn how to meet their needs through different behaviours.

Our history

Our beginnings

La maison de la famille de la Montérégie was founded in the early 1990s.

A few years later, different local actors, including Re-Nou-Vie, La Re-Source, CALACS and CLSC, mobilized around domestic violence issues and the lack of services for violent men. As a result, La maison de la famille de la Montérégie took on this mandate. In 1998, the organization restructured and adopted the name AVIF – Action sur la Violence et Intervention Familiale.

During the 1990s, AVIF was called upon by several partners to work with young people in schools and youth centres. In 1996-1997, a pilot project (À la source) was conducted at La Nouvelle École in Beauharnois to intervene among groups of young people. This led to the development of the Complètements Ados! program in 2002, officially launching the youth section of AVIF.

In 2015, to address growing needs and diverse demands, the board of directors expanded the original mission to offer services to men facing difficulties beyond domestic violence.

In 2018, due to a lack of funding and the growing challenges faced by young people, the Complètement Ados! program was put on hold to initiate a restructuring of the program and of the youth-family segment. During this period, individual follow-ups for youth ceased, while efforts focused on community collaboration and prevention and parent training workshops.

In 2020, new social contexts and investments in domestic violence services allowed AVIF to clarify and strengthen its adult service trajectory, emphasizing accountability. Additional funding in subsequent years enabled the creation of an additional intervention position to better meet increasing community needs.

In 2021, Complètements Ados! resumed operations on a smaller scale, redefining eligibility criteria to focus on prevention rather than rehabilitation and complementing professional referrals.

In 2022, AVIF secured new youth program funding through the Je Tisse des Liens Gagnants program by CISSSMO. This funding allowed the organization to launch a parent support group, responding to a need expressed by parents in previous workshops. In the same year, awareness workshops were integrated into services for violent men, helping participants better understand domestic and family violence, identify their needs and set goals. Additionally, the board of directors decided to make services more accessible by eliminating all user fees.
